Gigantic but graceful: Tower in Moscow.
For most of people living in the former Soviet Union not the Eiffel tower in Paris was the most famous tower in the world but.there was another tower that they knew even better: Moscow city's Ostankino Tower. Standing 1772 feet (540 metres) tall, it was the tallest free-standing structure in the whole world until in 2003 there was built another one, taller, in Canada. Still it is the tallest alone standing structure in Europe and Asia. |
Here the lofty Ostankino tower pierces right through the clouds! |
Not interested in tall towers? Don't worry, others are neither, such as for example American actress, author, television personality and former model Tyra Banks:
"I haven't seen the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Louvre. I haven't seen anything. I don't really care."
(Tyra Banks)
And the Ostankino Tower on fire in August 2000! |
According to Russian news agencies, the evacuation was complete 90 minutes after the start of the fire.
We leave you with a quote by Augustine of Hippo:
"Do you wish to rise?
Begin by descending.
You plan a tower that will pierce the clouds?
Lay first the foundation of humility."
(Augustine of Hippo)
