Renowned Indian classical music master Ravi Shankar's daughter Anoushka played the sitar live at the Verbier Music Festival.
Anoushka played part of a raga named 'Mishra Pilu'. (Raga = "colour" or "mood" in Sanskrit language, which refers to melodic modes used in Indian classical music.)
Joshua Bell on the violin and Tanmoy Bose at the tablas. She is definitively the jewel in the crown of her father's already exceptional talent.
Enjoy yet another monu-mental and orgiastic performance of 'The One Goddess' – this time hidden behind a musical camouflage…!
Anoushka Shankar born on 9th June 1981, is a sitar player and composer from India. She is the daughter of Ravi Shankar, Indian sitar player, and Sukanya Shankar. Through her father, she is the half-sister of Grammy Award winner Norah Jones. After her mother reunited with Mr Shankar, from age seven on she lived in Encinitas, California, USA where she gave several charity performances as a teenager and graduated from the local public high school.
Anoushka began playing sitar under her fathers guidance at the age of nine and blossomed into a wonderful musician. She gave a public performance at the age of thirteen; since then she has become a world famous sitar artist. She is becoming increasingly known for not only her recital work but for her own classical Indian compositions.
Her album 'Rise' was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Contemporary World Music category. This was Anoushka’s second Grammy nomination. She also became the first Indian woman to perform at the Grammy Awards when she performed during the pre-telecast ceremony of the 48th awards. Anoushka, in collaboration with Karsh Kale, has just released her most recent album, 'Breathing Under Water', a mix of classical sitar and electronica beats and melodies.
India Times, Asmi and The Indian Television Academy chose her as one of four 'Women of the Year' in India in 2003. Time Magazine's Asia edition chose her as one of twenty Asian Heroes in 2004.
